“workpiece” is a portrait of a body at work. Based on Anna-Marija Adomaityte’s experience and the testimonies of other McDonald’s employees, the performance questions the physical and social conditions of productivity and their effects on the body.
At work, I like my light green uniform, its collar and buttons up to my throat. When I wear it, I don’t feel my body ageing. Come as you are – this space is timeless and disease-free. Tender meat and pastel-coloured frozen products, the yellowish dots of sesame seeds. Golden arches on my ass, voluntary servitude, filet-o-fish, filet-o-flesh, medicines for mild insomnia, accumulated well-being.
Lovin’ Beats Hatin’, work consumes my body; love is stronger than hatred, tomorrows go by in drive-throughs, I remember… What are the sensitive experiences of the body at work made of? Can the body resist productivity? What changes does it undergo during exhaustive work?
Bio
Born in Lithuania, Anna-Marija Adomaityte studied contemporary dance at La Manufacture – Haute école des arts de la scène in Switzerland. Based in Geneva, she founded the contemporary dance company A M A. She is an associate artist at L’Abri – Genève, a long-term artistic residency program in Geneva. Her first performance, “workpiece”, was hosted by various international dance festivals. “Pas de deux”, her latest creation, premiered at La Bâtie – Festival de Genève and has been selected to be part of the European dance network AEROWAVES in 2022. Adomaityte is currently working on her third creation, “TikTok – Ready Choreographies”.
Gautier Teuscher is a musician and technician. Since 2016, he has been working in the field of sound, light and scenographic creations for theater, dance and performance. In 2018, he is an associate artist at L’Abri in Geneva where he continues to develop his musical practice through different projects.
