South African artist Buhlebezwe Siwani uses sculpture, drawing, photography, video and performance art to explore the role of the body and of physical presence in a given context, through the gaze of the spectator and the image each person develops of her or himself. In Those Ghels, performing with artist and dancer Chuma Sopotela, she interprets various 21st century songs that have shaped the manner in which women think and behave, turning them into gestures, scenes, subjects, dialogues and movements. This is an enthralling, energetic, colourful and deeply ironic representation in which the body takes on the shape of an instrument of protest and of a product of the structures of power at one and the same time.
