Silvia Calderoni and Ilenia Caleo continue their artistic research by investigating cruising as a relational and sexual practice of the gay male community, seen from the perspective of lesbian women/queer people. The performance draws on references from the artistic experimentation of New York’s gay scene in the 1970s and 1980s, before the arrival of AIDS – David Wojnarowicz, Peter Hujar, Tava, Frank Hallam, Alvin Balltrop and other gay and queer artists, writers and scholars. An archive of images and words that transforms into a bodily and affective work, a state of nameless excitement charging the environment. The urban space becomes wild again, it is an aesthetics of collapse, as in abandoned warehouses, the lawless outdoors, and battuages on highways. Wojnarowicz who wants to commit suicide, the heroin hole, shivering in the sun in the water, an exhausting joy. “The Present Is Not Enough” is a collective work that writes about a utopia of bodies, a yearning for community, a glimmering of possible futures that are not here yet and that we can only glimpse through a crack.
