Excavating patiently, as archaeologists do, to find a marginal note, an unexpressed thought, a barely sketched out idea, the photograph of an unmade set, is how we discover the creative process. It is like a huge, thick, coarse substance; the work that comes out of it is just the tip of the iceberg. This is the approach Daria Deflorian, Antonio Tagliarini, and Francesco Alberici take towards Red Desert, Michelangelo Antonioni’s first colour film. At Santarcangelo, the three artists will share the discoveries of their diggings (Scavi), a one-off project to be followed this fall by the opening of Quasi Niente, a performance freely inspired by the film, which is about Giuliana, the leading lady, “an elegantly dressed savage” who has the marginal quality that always attracts these two artists.
