Dalila Belaza Paris, France

Paris, France

For Dalila Belaza, dance is not a means of seduction nor a factory of spectacular images. Like a tightrope walker, it seeks to comprehend what eludes us while evading any attempt at definition. Dance is a mystery in motion, and rhythm is the guiding thread of “Rive”. The pas de bourrée – a ballet step passed down from one community to another – is the starting point to explore the concept of ritual. A persistent, telluric rhythm that reverberates and spreads across bodies and space. The human body sheds any form of representation to enter a vibrational dance that connects it to a dimension transcending its condition, leading to a state of jubilation. On stage, the dancers, in a large ensemble, create a single symphonic body that shows humanity as a living landscape. “Rive” wants to question alterity, inventing ceremonies capable of uniting distant worlds and revealing what they have in common, what is alive and timeless, to reach a state of transcendence.

As a child, Dalila Belaza did not dance, she listened. Storytelling, passed down through oral traditions, fuels her imagination. These stories, the cradle of her practice, come to life on stage through bodies. Her dance allows us to see the story that has inhabited her, like a mirror held up to the landscape. Dalila Belaza has been making her way through this fertile territory for almost thirty years: working on the disposition and availability of the body in terms of posture, breath and relationship to space, she shapes each gesture to turn entirely towards listening. Dalila Belaza is associate artist at la Briqueterie – CDCN du Val de Marne from 2024 to 2026, a programme funded by the Ministry of Culture.
