Murillo was a painter in seventeenth-century Spain who became famous for his portraits of young beggars – which he himself was as a child – in consolatory poses. These paintings originated a long series of genre paintings, whose modest imitations and cheap reproductions were appreciated by people with a humble status who used them to decorate their homes. Those cheap purchases symbolised the redemption of an art devoted to the representation of the lower classes. Claudia Castellucci’s tableau vivant dedicated to Murillo provides us with an anthology of begging, a treatise on how to reach out to ask for something when all you have is yourself, knowing that what you receive is only a leftover of what you are excluded from, or perhaps a deliberate distance from obscene wealth.

Bio

After studying visual arts, Claudia Castellucci founded Societas Raffaello Sanzio in 1981 with her brother Romeo, Chiara Guidi and others. Since 2006, she has devoted herself to the production of works related to a philosophical practice based on rhythm, which also led her to found several schools with an ancient inspiration, referring to the pleasure of knowledge rather than training: Scuola teatrica della discesa (1989-93); Stoa (2003-07) and Mòra (2015-19). In 2011, Castellucci led the École du rythme in Bordeaux during the Urban Art Biennale. Since 2014, after an initial experience in Athens, she has been directing the Rhythmic Movement Exercises worldwide. Her published texts include: “Uovo di bocca” (Bollati Boringhieri, 2000), “Setta. Scuola di tecnica drammatica” (Quodlibet, 2015), and “Bollettini della Danza” (Edizioni Sete, 2019). In 2020, Claudia Castellucci received the Silver Lion at the Venice Dance Biennale.
