L’ombelico dei limbi

Turin, Italy

One of the most influential playwrights, actors and theorists of the 20th century, Antonin Artaud wrote L’Ombilic des limbes when he was barely 30 years old. The volume was published in 1925, and it brings together a series of composite texts in which we find many of the themes that Artaud would develop in later works: alienation from the world, the creation of a new language and the painful fragmentation of identity. This is the starting point for Stefania Tansini’s new performance – conceived especially for the space of the former Buzzi Unicem cement factory – in which the body and voice serve as a clear testimony of the anguish of reality, a living and carnal reality. This performative journey questions the relationship between things, defleshing the place and the body in a contradictory tension: on the one hand, the desire to free oneself, to tear oneself to pieces, to keep oneself out of the world, and on the other, the desire to reconstitute and share the torment of the body.
