What is utopia? What is heroism? Rosa sees it in the humble fight of an upside-down cockroach against ants. How can we heroically face what is small and apparently insignificant? What is worth fighting for?
Over a century ago, Rosa Luxemburg, a Marxist revolutionary, was assassinated by the right-wing Freikorps militia in Berlin. Nova Melancholia pays tribute to a lost revolution and a personality that inspires us to this day. The performance title is taken from one of her “prison letters” sent to Sonia Liebknecht between 1917 and 1918. These texts are examples of pure humanity and incredible sensitivity towards all living creatures including birds, insects and plants. The five performers on stage come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, highlighting the international connotation of Rosa’s spirit. Using precarious objects, bodies and voices as props, they bring to life an evanescent monument, a tribute to a great revolutionary and her ability to imagine a heroic landscape.
The Greek collective Nova Melancholia has been navigating the ever-evolving space of theatre and visual arts since 2007, attempting a non-systematic mapping of aesthetics and texts that contributed to shaping the current concept of melancholia. Through non-linear narratives and open dramaturgies, the collective produces seemingly disconnected actions that create multiperspective sceneries.
Nudity takes centre stage, capturing it and adorning it with beauty, overcoming the audience’s shame, which examines visually limpid bodies searching for the truth of the story and finding its depth.
