Giorgia Ohanesian Nardin Turin, Italy
Գիշեր | gisher
Impostor syndrome is ancestral heritage is intergenerational trauma. Yesterday I had so much fire that I had to lie on the grass facing down with my palms on the ground. I wanted to stop feeling my body burning so much. Have I become my coping mechanisms?
“Գիշեր | gisher” is a live work and a video performance that touches narrations dealing with geography, the body, identity, belonging and conflict. “Գիշեր | gisher” is a two-part work mostly filmed and written in Armenia – where the war over the occupation of Artsakh territory by Azerbaijani armed forces resumed in July 2020, when the work was premiering. It begins in a space where the audience is invited to experience a collage of sound and images. Subsequently, in alignment with traditions of oral transmission of knowledge specific to many communities of the SWANA (South West Asian and North African) regions, the public sits around a fire to listen to the voices of 8 artists invited by Giorgia Ohanesian Nardin. “Գիշեր | gisher” is the action of fuelling, keeping lit, burning. Images multiply and disrupt the vision, asking the beholder to orientate themselves. Words are written, spoken, offered and translated aloud.
Bio
Giorgia Ohanesian Nardin is an Italian artist of Armenian descent working with dance and live performances. Their work takes many shapes: movement, video, text, choreography, sound and gatherings, and it concerns narratives of hostility, survival strategies, rest, sensuality and healing. They began their artistic practice in 2010 in collaboration with artists Marco D’Agostin and Francesca Foscarini, with whom they founded Associazione Culturale VAN (2014). Since 2018, Giorgia Ohanesian Nardin regularly holds “Pleasure Body”, a space for queer, trans and non-binary subjectivities. VIERNULVIER will produce their work in 2022 and 2023, and they were selected for Breaking the Spell, a research and practice production project on the ethics of care from a feminist perspective.
