Emilio transforms and is transformed. He experiments, alters, constructs, inhabits, mutates. He creates a multitude of fluid spaces, hybrid spaces, impure landscapes transcending limits, living one inside the other. Superimpositions. Change always includes a trace of what was before.
Emilio is inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s treatise of the same name – Emile, or On Education – a study on humanity written in 1762. The philosopher describes the state of nature as a happy, utopian presocial. But how can we educate a child in a corrupt and corrupting society? Without books nor regulations: nothing must be taught to Emilio, who has to learn everything himself and in contact with nature. The performance comes to life through the creation and destruction of tableaux vivants, playing with the distinction between organic and inorganic, dead and alive, organism and machine, body and object. The stage is a picture in constant mutation. Images create and crumble: a still life becomes a laboratory for experimentation, an atelier, a clinic, a landscape. Seemingly distant elements meet, perhaps incoherently, giving rise to new possible meanings and aesthetics.
