Debriefing Session: Santarcangelo Festival

from July 06 to 14for timings, languages and venues check the Info box at the end of the page

Let’s talk about absence. Or rather, around it.
Here’s the starting point: what is missing? How to train our gaze, oversaturated with visual information, to look for what is not there, instead of taking the bait and getting obediently outraged by what is presented to us?
We think that one of the most urgent skills we can learn today is finding those opaque pockets of absence in the narratives that are being presented to us. Whose voice is missing, and why? What is included in dominant, history-making narratives and what is excluded?
Because it is us, now, who are writing history as we are living it. All of us. We have this power today. And we are not using it. Not one bit.

“In his diary, Meir Dizengoff, the first mayor of Tel Aviv, wrote that three public spaces defined European cities — the boulevard, the square, and the museum. By building each of these, Tel Aviv carefully modeled itself after a European ideal”. (The Agent draws a direct line from 1948 to MUSEUM, and writes ISRAEL over the line)

Debriefing Session: Santarcangelo Festival will host a one-on-one meeting with Public Movement Agent, who draw together a wide net of accounts, charting the group’s research about modern art made in Palestine before 1948 and its striking absence from institutional memory. Debriefing Session explores the relationship between art institutions, state ideology and the role it plays in the processes of normalization and re-writing history.
The new version for Santarcangelo continues this research with some examples of Italian art made between 1909 and 1945, which was lost, destroyed or disappeared during WWII – often consumed by the same ideology it wished to represent. Public Movement proposes the debriefing format as a performative methodology for the transmission of information, turning research into action.
