Death and Birth in My Life

July 9, 10 and
12 to 17various times

Which deaths and which births have influenced and changed my life so far? Who have I welcomed, who have I lost and said farewell to – and what has happened to me in the process? Mats Staub’s long-term projects often investigate existential experiences, drawing from significant events in his personal life – in this case, the death of his brother and a rebirth-experience with his brothers’ son. To create his video installations, the author has taken part in many conversations in the last 15 years. But this time he chose to remain silent and let the participants begin the dialogue and share their experiences relating to death and birth. Both participants are filmed while talking and listening. This way, the viewers can simultaneously observe their faces and their expressions as if the conversation were taking place at that exact moment. The essential dramaturgy removes the pressure of everyday conversations from the delicate action of talking about intimate moments. We just have to listen, pay attention and be open to what is being said. For Santarcangelo Festival, Staub has developed a “living-room” version of Death and Birth in My Life. The public will witness the outcome of this experience in the homes of residents of Santarcangelo. The goal is to facilitate a communal experience by creating an intimate and protected environment.
