CUTLASS SPRING

Montréal, Canada

Performer, mother, daughter, lover: how does one locate their sexual identity within a multitude of complimentary and seemingly contradictory identities? Dana Michel returns to Santarcangelo, where she presented “Yellow Towel” in 2017, this time bringing a penetrating and unexpected gaze on the liberation of a body and the most authentic expression of the self. Michel reveals a glimpse of her intimacy and inner self, mapping a sexual education with all of its embodiments, fabrications and disassociations. But this is not necessarily the theme the public must read and perceive: it is a starting point for a multiplicity of trajectories and questions. Can withholding a specific sexuality be considered a form of repression? At what cost? And at whose expense? In a slow process of de-censoring, discovering and displaying the infinite potential of everyday objects – forks, cans, bags – with which the performer interacts, “CUTLASS SPRING” is at once a manifesto and a heated reflection, an ethnography of sexual understanding and an archaeology of desire.
