I grew up in the city, and I always lived on the sixth floor of a condominium where my mother had created a garden of potted plants on the balcony. For me, that was a marvellous place.
In a flowerbed, a small garden, at the edge of a road or the footpath, between the cracks in the asphalt, green starts to grow. For those who live in an urban context, “green” is the amalgamation of everything that is related to nature, from meadows to trees, from flowers to the chirping of sparrows. From the fascination with a plant capable of growing in a cramped space, with the flowers forced by man and his social needs to be filler, or even surrogate or fetish, the performance of ControNatura is born: a mass of vegetation, petrified and made monochrome by the artifice of painting which, over time, and with the affectionate care of citizens, will grow and regain life, overcoming the colour barrier placed upon it.
Giacomo Cossio was born in Parma in 1974 and graduated in Architecture at the University of Ferrara. Since 2004, he has been exhibiting and collaborating with private galleries and public institutions and has held numerous solo and collective exhibitions. The fundamental theme around which his work revolves is the naturalistic element.
Cossio’s work finds its matrix in a sort of “hand-to-hand” combat with objectivity, in the moment in which the artist seems to oppose the mute obstinacy of things with an obstinacy of equal measure […]. Through the installation of potted plants covered with paint, and therefore, at first glance, ‘denaturalised’, what wants to be emphasised here is, in every sense, the pure and simple data of nature, that which eludes any historical and contingent determination, that inescapable ‘standing out’ before our eyes in the form of an archetype.
