Bright Room /

July 1118.30

We had a powerful idea. We have been developing it with friends and partners: Bebe Books, Fierce Festival, Freddie Wulf, Imbricated Real, Industria Indipendente, Kampnagel, Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER, Oozing Gloop, Queereeoké.
We have been working together to create Bright Room – A space for queer celebration. We have imagined Bright Room as a physical space in the city centre, which would temporarily change its character and function. We wanted to give this space to artists who could share their practices and ideas inside the Bright Room. We wanted to make this space as safe as possible, to give us all an opportunity to celebrate our queerness. Bright Room was meant to be a space hosting workshops, talks, wellness sessions, parties and meetings open to all Festival participants. The project was conceived as the space that invites different communities to “navigate” in a generous atmosphere.
We know that it is not always easy to make powerful ideas happen. And, unfortunately, this time we didn’t manage to. After months of collective work, we realised that – for financial and technical reasons – we could not create Bright Room as we imagined it. And we have decided that there is no space for compromise. Bright Room – A space for queer celebration will not happen this year in Santarcangelo, but it is still a space to come, and we believe that, sooner or later, we will find a way to make this idea come true.
Through the years, Santarcangelo Festival has established itself as a space of hope and resistance for many young artists with queer identities and aesthetics. To keep supporting this community, together with Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER (Ghent), Kampnagel (Hamburg) and Fierce Festival (Birmingham), we have decided to keep the presence of artists previously invited to be a part of Bright Room in the main programme of Santarcangelo Festival. Even if we did not manage to create a physical space for Queer Celebration, we believe that during the Festival there will be a lot of opportunities and encounters that will help us celebrate queerness.
If you would like to meet the artists originally invited to participate in Bright Room – A space for queer celebration, take a look at these events: Bebe Books,THE OFF-TEMPLE; Industria Indipendente, MERENDEXSANTARCANGELO; QUEEREEOKÈ; Oozing Gloop, MOVIE MADNESS; Freddie Wulf, ACCESS AND ART PRACTICE.
To further discuss the idea and the potential of Bright Room – A space for queer celebration and what we would actually need to create it in the future, the partners and artists of the project would like to invite festival artists, curators and audiences to participate in an open discussion on Monday 11 July, at 18:30, at Bisonte Café.
