Also for the other oneself
First festival of a new three year period – arisen from the past plural experience we lived through together with three artist -, Santarcangelo. 12 bears the mark of the patience, enthusiasm, and hesitations we've worked with, and even the name declares a being that is scarcely out of infancy, an existence in the present. It’s a festival that has sought to find its own measure between uncertainties and hazards, to listen a lot and to cut out for itself radical freedom of its own, which is not the freedom to follow only oneself but to inhabit the space of many and to work also for the other oneself. This year with difficulty and tenacity we’ve been attentive to capacity for making ourselves available, waiting, disregarding certain expectations, creating a widening in time where something might turn up. A joyful élan has been cultivated, emphatic and neglectful of self, the call to adventure and the unknown, and the furor with which one seeks in what one does not understand – one seeks precisely because one does not understand – and one tackle the same problem every day in a perennial ‘from the top’, persistent, sometimes really stubborn, misunderstood and necessary. Through the lens of art we’ve looked at ourselves and at the Italian and European theatrical scene, at its memory, at its present and new rising forms in order to explore the common lives we all live in: as individuals crossed by feelings and emotions, through certain visions of the world and imagination, theatre can capture us in our frailties, and in the profound connection to others and history. When creating the programme we’ve both questioned the festival’s well-established paradigms but we’ve also sought to cast our eyes towards the unknown, rethinking several places – from the piazza to disused industrial buildings – with the aid of artists capable of imagining unexpected possibilities; in programming some itinerant if not actually repertory shows where it seemed important to see them (again) and set them in a different context, in the conviction that Santarcangelo isn’t a showcase but a place of artistic experience; in opening international dialogues with collectives of fifty years’ standing and with artists at their debut. And above all we’ve been imagining projects that are out of format with respect to the theatre, which overflows with simplicity and brazenness into art, writing, drawing, and cinema; in getting kids, old folk, citizens and foreigners involved in creations by artists who are able to set up a short-circuit between stage and life, far from any TV form, from any narcissism, to remind us how art is a place for distillation of the real, a space where it is possible to practice a glance of inexperience and courage, to make oneself vulnerable to what one does not know and is not understood, what does not belong to us and to which we perhaps belong.
