Between the millenniums theatre lives a period rich in the most different languages, result of aesthetic and philosophical researches.
In this context Santarcangelo becomes the focal point where works and thoughts weave together and spread.
The present course is directed by Silvio Castiglioni, perhaps the most organic figure and that that best complies with the Festival and its history.
Castiglioni is an actor and was a founder of that Teatro di Ventura also Merisi belonged to;
we mentioned him close to De Bernardinis in the years immediately before his designation and still now we can see him giving birth to a project that does not fear crossing genres and themes, mixing up forms and contents, recognizing fathers and welcoming parricides because “It needs to be blaspheme to practice the cult of tradition”.
In its thirtieth anniversary Santarcangelo dei Teatri is “L’orizzonte e la memoria” (Horizon and Memory), and, with Brecht,”Tamburi nella notte” (Drums in the Night), a “paths web” drawn with sensibility and poetry.
It is up to Castiglioni and the co-director he wanted with him, Massimo Marino, to face a period marked with a big lack in means to support arts.
Finding balances for the present and the future of a Festival which has always been in close relation with its time invites directors to tie new bounds with the audience, widening those contacts’ networks which make this event an annual occasion for meetings and comparisons among international operators and artists.
In this context grew the Festival newspaper, directed by Gianni Manzella and coordinated by Marino, which publishes observations and evidences, enlivening constantly the debate since last De Bernardinis’ direction.

Castiglioni’s artistic geographies go from Leo De Bernardinis to Giuliano Scabia, from Hideo Kanze to Sotigui Kouyatè, from Rézo Gabriadzé to Massimo Schuster, from Franco Scaldati to Mimmo Cuticchio, Claudio Morganti and Alfonso Santagata, to come to Pippo Delbono Company and Marcido Marcidoris, Tam Teatromusica, Raffaella Giordano and Teatro delle Briciole.
The view includes also I Magazzini and “the columns of Romagna”, research’s diamond points and integrant part of Santarcangelo Festival: Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, Teatro Valdoca and Teatro delle Albe together with new strong artistic figures of today such as Motus, Fanny & Alexander and the Emilian Teatrino Clandestino and L’Impasto.
Even bigger is the amount of rising groups among which we would mention Spiro Scimone, Libera mente, Babbaluck, Agar, Teatro del Lemming, Accademia degli artefatti, Domenico Castaldo.

Born as “square theatre”, in these years the Festival has assigned the main stage to ethnic concerts.
Being a laboratory, it does not leave out seminars, meetings and its relations with publishers.
In every edition the Festival of the town without a theatre reinvents new stages, nurturing imagination with structures and beaches, natural amphitheatres and industrial sheds, caves and deserted holiday camps.
